In 1861, German inventor Johann Philipp Reis demonstrated the first prototype of the telephone, transmitting the phrase "Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat" ("The horse does not eat cucumber salad"). This happened long before Alexander Bell received a patent for his telephone. The phrase was chosen for its acoustic complexity, allowing researchers to test whether the device could transmit speech rather than just musical sounds. However, Reis's invention did not gain widespread recognition
